DETAILS

From Ian Spanier:
I have had a camera since I was 6, and while denying a career as a photographer as a plan, many times started my career as a Photo Editor at Conde Nast, starting in their archive, then moving on to jobs at GQ, Esquire, ESPN, Men's Journal, Marie Claire, Muscle & Fitness amongst other freelance projects. I began shooting on the side pretty much right away, eventually deciding I tired of hiring photographers to do what I was capable of myself despite being a regular Award Winning editor. While living in LA I was offered an editing job in NY and convinced the creative director into hiring me instead to create an in-house photo department. The small publishing  company grew to publish 5 magazine titles before succumbing to the recession and folding. I then went full
time freelance as a photogorapher. My clients include: A&E, HBO, MTV, UFC, Runner's World, psychology today, Fast Company, Muscle & Fitness, FLEX, WP Carey, MuscleMag, Conde Nast Traveler amongst others and my first full book of photography, Playboy's Guide to Cigars was published a year and a half ago. Awards include American Photography, International Color Awards, Planet Magazine, PDN World in Focus, OneLife and SPD.

I am sponsored by Photoflex, Lowepro and Imagenomic.

I will speak in Philadelphia at the PhillySMUG on the business of photography. One of the areas many young photographers underestimate is that this is a business we are in, and not just about taking pictures. I'll discuss how running your business is imperative to staying in business. My methods to promote my business thru social media, website, self promotion, meetings and networking. I'll also discuss my invoicing system and digital storage techniques.
